Compare No More

Do you find yourself getting irritated by those who proudly display their creativity on social media? Or watching/listening to that perfect mom who seems to have it all together and has time to post long blogs, write books and even create tutorial videos of their passions? Do the words “show off” pop into your mind or even spill out of your mouth a little? I know how you feel. I have been aiming for feeling differently.

Irritation is the symptom; comparison is at the root of the problem. The comparison trap has been a social problem since the beginning of human history. It divides families (sibling rivalry- Cain and Able anyone?), neighbors (keeping up with the Johnsons) and countries (who has more power?). At the personal level, it can leave an individual just plain frustrated and dissatisfied with life. So, let’s change that.

First, who created the heavens and the earth? That’s right, God did. He also had you in His plans since the beginning of time, life circumstance and all. Really? Your childhood hurts, your teenage struggles and your adult life complexities were all within the scope of God’s vision since the beginning of time. He didn’t make any mistakes then and He certainly did not make a mistake the day you were brought into existence. From your mother’s womb He spoke your name, yours and every human who has ever been birthed. (Isaiah 49:1)

Second, look at yourself in the mirror. Contemplate your image for a few seconds and then look even further, into your soul. You are the image of your Father, and He is not Darth Vader. Your Father is light. “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘ am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.'” (James 8:12) He lights up your world with your life because He is in you. Whoa!

Third and last, (for now; stop me in the hallway if you want to hear a thousand more reasons why you do not need to compare yourself to anyone), “But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

Seriously, need I say more?
